In "Sonny Blues" if Baldwin had put the setting somewhere else besides Harlem they wouldn't be dealing with the same issues. As seen here, "but the reason why I left I wanted to leave Harlem so bad was to get away from drugs" (Baldwin 110). Sonny didn't want to be around a place where it caused him to do bad things; however, Harlem is integral to the story because it takes place during the Harlem Renaissance.
